It is important to understand that mystical religion is radically different from non-mystical religion in insisting that nothing short of direct experience of God is enough.
It is not enough to believe that God exists.
It is not enough to believe that God has incarnated to bring spiritual salvation to the world.
It is not enough to go to a church, synagogue, mosque, or temple or to participate in the forms or rituals of religion.
It is not enough to pray, meditate, perform charitable acts, visit places of pilgrimage, fast, endure other physical austerities, study holy books, or associate with holy persons.
It is not enough to undergo psychotherapy.
Nothing short of direct experience of God is enough.
