MesoAmerican Healing Ritual

Hey folks,

Just these few words down your way hoping you had a great weekend and your in good spirits, and health.

While visiting my father, my cousin Cindy and I stumbled upon the Azteca/Mexica dancers of Calpulli Tonalehqueh  and Eztli Chicahua along with some smaller groups at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland, California. 

The purpose of the union was to perform an ancient healing ritual for the city and it's citizens.

There has been such negative energy surrounding this particular part of the city, that it was necessary to begin the ritual here, at this very epi-center, where the healing masters can focus their energy.

The MesoAmerican drum beats moved through me and ignited my healing energies.

Today is April 20, 2011, making it a special day for marijuana smokers around the world, particularly in America.

Many will be lighting up.

Judging by the ride on BART, the chatter makes it seem like people feel they should get a free pass to smoke pot today.  A few had hope that they wouldn't be bothered by police.  

I went into the city to meet a friend for lunch, and then we were to stop by the Vapor Room, a medical cannabis dispensery. 

I had never been to this club, so my friend thought we should try it out at least once, and we are glad we did!

Naguales - Duality Totems

If you have seen the movie "The Golden Compass", the following might help clarify the concept of "daimons" for you.  - Pholus

NAGUALES (Duality Totems):

The Nahua peoples, such as Aztec and Maya, believe each person has a connection to a spirit called a Nagual (NAH-gwahl), or more commonly by the Maya, Uay (oo-EYE) and Aztecs, Nahual (NAH-wahl), which is not necessarily a physical creature, but makes itself known to the person at some point and helps to guide and aid him or her. The word Uay or Nahual means “alter-ego” or “alternate form (or aspect)” and refers to the innate “duality” inherent in all gods and humans. Similar to the Eastern concept of Yin and Yang, implying “opposites”, but more generally, simply “different.” Duality is simply the Nahua way of saying that there are two sides to everything in life that had to stay in balance in order to maintain harmony.

These protector spirits are emanations of Spirit-Doubles from the soul. The concept is similar in many respects to guardian angels among Christians; Fetches among Pagan witches; Daimons among the ancient Greek faith which were both benevolent and malevolent spirits (Christianity absorbed the term as "demon" and, like the sylvan god Pan, changed them into evil creatures; devils); Kachinas among the Hopi and Zuni peoples; or Totem creatures among other Amerindian groups.

The Chontal people of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico maintain a belief in the independent life of a person's soul, similar to the life of Naguales. They hold that the soul lives in a person's heart or breath, and that it has a human form.

The Nagual is imagined usually as an animal, insect or bird, but could also be a plant like an ear of corn, a reed or a flower; part of the body like a bone, eye or hand; an object like a star, the Moon, a mirror, stone, house, or arrow; a title like shaman, warrior or an ancestor; a natural phenomena, such as light, darkness, rain, wind, lightning, solar flares or meteors; mythical creatures like fire-serpents; or even a concept like death, the Afterlife or an offering. Naguales are spiritually bonded to the person throughout their entire life and dies when the person dies. This relationship is called “Tonal” (Toe-NAHL) and the Nagual protects, guards and inspires the human or god with whom it is associated.

The term "tonal" is frequently used in contrast to the Nagual distinguishing between the creature or object and the relationship between the human and it's Nagual spirit. The term tonal derives from the Nauhualt word tonalli, a word bearing such connotations as solar heat, day, day name, destiny and soul or spirit. It is believed that the tonalli soul of an infant was sent from the highest of the 13 Heavens, Omeyocan, the Place of Duality. This soul was inextricably tied into the Aztec calendar called the Tonalphohaulli (called Tzolk'in by the Maya) of 260 days which is one of 20 Day-signs represented by a specific creature, object or concept, combined with a number between 1 and 13, representing a resonance of a galactic or cosmic energy or musical tone which modifies the Day-sign. In many parts of Mesoamerica, individuals were named for the day in the 260-day calendar on which they were born or baptized, and these dates had very specific auguries (auspices or omens) or "energies" related to them. For instance, 5-Monkey was considered a good day (He who was then born was like the workings and qualities of the day: telling of tales, and jesting, but there was no anger) but being born on the next day, 6-Grass, was evil (he who was then born lived only in torment on earth, suffered pain and trouble, and found afflictions).

People were not necessarily bound by these energies, but could be better understood as the "stage" upon which the individual played out their lives, and would learn to function within these energies tapping into other aspects of their life, through other names and personal Naguales.

As noted, often a child is given a Nagual at birth, such as the Day Sign which can be their spiritual name (i.e., Maya: Uuc Cauac/Aztec: Chicome Quiahuitl, which in English is “7-Storm” or “Reflective Firestorm"), or their given name is connected in some way to the Nagual. Most often, though, children are not told what their Nagual was until they were old enough to understand how to use the information. Othertimes, a person would find their Nagual by going off alone on a vision quest into the forest or desert.

The Nagual might appear in a dream or even be present when they wake up.

The Nagual is powerful, and even has the ability to transform its charge into the very creature or thing the spirit represents. For instance, the Feathered Serpent is the Nagual of the hero-god Quetzalcóatl, and the Nagual of Tezcatlipoca is a Night Jaguar, otherwise, these gods typically appear as normal humans. A curious aspect of Naguales, which may not be limited to the gods, is that they can also temporarily take on aspects and personas of different animals or objects and therefore different names, such as when Quetzalcóatl becomes Ehécatl, “the Wind.” The gods have also been known to have more than one Nagual in attendance, such as the fire-god, Xiuhtecuhtli, who usually has two Fire-Serpents (Xiucoatls, “turquoise serpents”),in the form of solar-flares or “returning comets.”

Each person’s Nagual, looks after that individual's needs on a spiritual level. On the rare occasions when a Nagual manifests as a material entity, it appears as a small animal of one sort or another. Normally, they communicate to their charges through dreams and visions from a realm called Uayib (oo-EYE-EEB), the Dreaming Place, that both can visit, but typically it is the Nagual that will travel while the charge sleeps to gather the information and report back in a dream. They can be sent off to carry out difficult tasks, such as confronting someone or helping someone who does not want to be helped.

To early Christian Colonial priests and missionaries, these form-changers, sometimes called, Naualli, were not considered simply to be baseless superstition, but were considered to be sorcerers or witches, and were a source of great concern. In 1600 CE, Fray Jaun Bautista warned of native sorcerers that transformed themselves into dogs, weasels, owls, chickens and jaguars. The 17th century parish priest Ruiz de Alarcón mentioned specific cases of native shape-shifters and explained their powers by claiming they had a pact with Satan. Although the concept of the Nagual recalls European conceps of witchcraft, it is clearly of native Mesoamerican origin, and closely tied to native concepts of shamanic power and transformation, and were frequently known for their ability to commit malignant acts, they also serve as protectors of the community. It was believed that even in battle, warriors could transform into a pack of wolves or jaguars to defend their territories. This can often blur the distinction between the shape-changing human and the actual Nagual.

A contemporary myth from El Salvador tells the story of a woman who could change into a pig. At the full moon she would kneel down or stand upon a rock. Turning three times to the right and three times to the left, she changes into a pig and frightens other villagers and steal from people as they came from the marketplace. One night a man watched as the woman transformed herself into the pig. When she left, he hid the rock. Try as she could, without the rock, she could not transform herself back and was forced to remain a pig.

Vision Serpent - a very important social and religious symbol, revered by the Maya. Maya mythology describes serpents as being the vehicles by which celestial bodies, such as the sun and stars, cross the heavens. The shedding of their skin made them a symbol of rebirth and renewal. During Maya bloodletting rituals, participants would experience visions in which they communicated with the ancestors or gods. These visions took the form of a giant serpent "which served as a gateway to the spirit realm." The ancestor or god who was being contacted was depicted as emerging from the serpent’s mouth. The vision serpent thus came to be the method in which ancestors or Gods manifested themselves to the Maya. Thus for them, the Vision Serpent was direct link between the spirit realm of the gods and the physical world. One of the most common rituals associated with the Vision serpent involved invoking ancestral sprits. Especially during coronation rites, the kings would contact the spirits for guidance and blessings. It is the Vision Serpent who provides the medium for contacting these deities. One such Vision Serpent was named Och-Kan.

Xiuhcoatl (Shee-wah-ko-ah-tul) or “fire serpent,” meaning “turquoise serpent” was serpentine creature with a segmented body and snout which can turn sharply backwards. Xiucoatl also means “returning comet,” and was associated with fire and the solar heat (i.e., solar flares). At least two nagual Xiucoatls attend the fire-god, Xiuhtecuhtli, and they are thought to signify the flames which represent the New Fire. Both the Sun and Night were adorned with xiucoatls, mythical and celestial serpents.

Itzam-Ye (EETS-ahm-Yay), the Serpent Bird, or Celestial Bird, is associated with the four corners of the world and perches high at the crown of the World Tree (Aztec: Ahuehuetl, Maya: Tzuk té or Yax'ché), the Tree of Heaven under which good souls rejoice, surveying all below. Itzam Ye is the Maya symbol of expanded consciousness, and is the personal Nagual of Itzamná. Itzam Ye flies forth from our consciousness, dispersing light around the world. In another guise, he may be Vukub-Cakix, "7-Macaw," the "false sun" the hero twins of the Popul Vuh shot from his perch atop the World Tree to prepare for the raising of the sky of the present world. The Quiche Maya identify the Big Dipper as 7 Macaw. Or it could be that Itzam-Ye and Vukub-Cakix are two distinctly different creatures. [source]

The Color Blue

I’ve had quite a few emails questioning my color choice for my blog site. A question from one of my readers, Amy,  asks,

"... why did you chose black for my background it seems a little ...um ...dark.”

My perception is that my words are the light in the darkness shining through, trying to awake people. So, it’s really all perception, and how your state of mind creates a reality and births your own worldview.

Change your perception, and change your world.

I really wanted my words to stand out, and more imporantly,  I chose to use the color Blue for it's natural positive energy.

Most people do not understand the impact color has on our physical body and on our emotional states. Color is wherever we are: at home, school, workplaces and hospitals.

Walk into any kindergarten room and most likely you’ll notice a lot of bright colors on the walls. These colors stimulate brain functioning and make learning more fun. Some Tibetan teachers of Buddhism decorate their meditations rooms in midnight blue to calm the mind, with vertical lines of deep red to help wake up consciousness.

Color therapy helps people release tension and promotes healing by utilizing colors associated with the seven energy centers in the body.

Some color therapists also aim colored lights on an area of the body that is in need of healing. Colored light treatments have been known to increase or slow metabolic activity in an area and promote healing, depending on the color. Most alternative health practitioners have experimented with color and its powers to affect a person’s state of mind and health.

Scientists have found that color is actually mood altering and it is one of the most important keys to relaxation. If you think about this, it makes so much sense, understanding that 80% of illnesses are a direct result of stress, therefore, relaxing plays a huge role in disease prevention.

In the book Color and Light in Man-Made Environments, author Frank H. Mahnke notes: --People subjected to visual under-stimulation showed symptoms of restlessness, excessive emotional response, difficulty in concentration, irritation, and, in some cases, a variety of more extreme reactions. The effects of color are drastic!

Researcher Robert Gerard found through experimentation that when subjects looked at red lights flashing, their blood pressure, breathing rates and the amount of sweat on palms all increased, as did the frequency of eye blinks. On the other hand, when subjects looked at the blue light, blood pressure dropped, as did the amount of eye blinks and breathing.

Dr. Gerard found that colors with longer wavelengths (the warm colors: red, yellow and orange) hype us up, while shorter wave lengths (cooler colors like blue, purple and green) calm us down.

Because peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, it is often used in bedrooms. It is believed that blue slows metabolic activity. Blue can also be cold and depressing.

Blue is described as a favorite color by many people and is the color most preferred by men. The color blue calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity. It is often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly.

Blue is often used to decorate offices because research has shown that people are more productive in blue rooms and is one of the most popular colors, but it is one of the least appetizing. Weight loss plans even recommend eating your food off of a blue plate. What is interesting is that the color Blue rarely occurs naturally in food aside from blueberries, plums, and some grapes. Studies find that the color Blue can also lower the pulse rate and body temperature.

In our language alone, we find the color Blue is often used:

blue moon, blue Monday, blue blood, the blues, and blue ribbon, black and blue, blue-collar, a bolt from the blue, blue blood, a blue-eyed boy, into the wide/wild blue yonder, the boys in blue, like blue blazes, between the devil and the deep blue sea, out of the blue, be in a (blue) funk, talk a blue streak, scream blue murder, until you are blue in the face, once in a blue moon, a blue-arsed fly, and true-blue among others. - We are, after all, living on the "blue planet."

When questioned, 50% of people claim blue as their favorite color. Blue denim is the most common clothing material in the western world, and blue cars have been among the top selling cars for decades.

In systems which correlate favorite colors with color symbolism, people who wear light blue are said to be analytical and have a practical approach to life.

People who wear dark blue are intelligent and self-reliant and are found to take on a great deal of responsibility. In any case, people are comfortable with blue and return to blue again and again.

The color Blue symbolism emphasizes the cooling and relaxing qualities of blue, reminding us of the peace and calmness of night. Midnight night blue has a sedative effect that promotes meditation and intuition, and is being explored when building new hospitals, especially noting the location, now being built atop of building closer to the sky.

It’s no wonder we can associate the color Blue with power.

Blue is also the color of protection and is nearly universal in meaning, and as a result, the color Blue is used in national flags and symbols around the world, including the flag of the United Nations. 

We all know and have used the phrase "once in a blue moon." We give the best a "blue ribbon.” A person born of royalty is a "blue blood."

However, too much dark blue can be depressing, therefore we’re said to have the "blues."

The color Blue is associated metaphysically with the throat and thyroid gland, and as mentioned above, it has been shown to reduce blood pressure, thus calming the autonomic nervous system and is anti-inflammatory.

Dark blue affects the pituitary gland, which affects sleep. It is also known to reduce pain and strengthen the skeletal body by keeping bone marrow healthy.

However, blue symbolism also has some negative associations due to the connection between lack of oxygen and blue skin color.

In Greek and Roman days, blue symbolism was associated with the sky gods Jupiter, Juno and Mercury. In Judaism, blue symbolism is connected to God the Father. In the Catholic Church, blue symbolism is most closely related to the Virgin Mary, the Queen of Heaven. In Islam, blue symbolism (including turquoise) is the color both of religion and community and is often used for decorating mosques.

I use color therapy in my everyday life, by painting my home in color association, such as my bedrooms being a beautiful soft blue, which helps alleviate insomnia. My dining room was painted a golden yellow which is associated with appetite, and I find it actually contributes to the overall experience all together.

Last but not least, the color Blue is a natural choice for bathrooms due to the color symbolism association with water.

When an animals coat is described as "blue", it usually refers to a shade of black that takes on a bluish tint, a diluted variant of a pure black coat.

It’s no wonder that I have a Blue Healer, Australian Sheppard, named Brandy. Her coat looks blue in the sunlight, and her eyes are the most beautiful thing to look out, half brown and half blue in each eye.

The color Blue symbolism provides a fascinating look at one of the most prevalent and beloved colors around the world. There is Blue symbolism in all aspects of life and even religion, as it is a representation of loyalty and faith. The color Blue is most popular in the western world with all its blue skies and blue water, both of which are full of positive meaning and is associated with freedom, strength, optimism and better opportunities, and new beginnings.

The Living Matrix

I just finished watching The Living Matrix, which features top geneticists, scientists and switching between true stories of people healed and releasing powerful scientific studies — the movie was very similar to What the Bleep, Do we Know!?, this movie truly moved me as well. In my ever changing paradigm we are ALL healers.

To me the movie illustrates that I am currently on the right path. And as more and more of the masses see this movie, and fully absorb the information being released here, we all, as a collective consciousness, can move forward by awakening to the way we look at our health, and healing. This isn't new information, Bohm, and Pribram did studies in the late 50's. I recommend you read the Holographic Universe, by Michael Talbot.

This movie grabs your heart from the beginning with the story of Dimitrios, a little boy in Greece with Cerebral Palsy who Dr. Eric Pearl had a few Reconnective healing sessions with. Dimitri was told by conventional doctors he would never walk on his own, play unassisted or even be able to feed himself because of the shape of his hands and feet. After persuasion from close friends Dimitri’s family took him to see Dr. Eric Pearl and the healing began almost instantly. We see Dimitri playing on a playground, feet healed, hands able to grasp onto the bars. He is MUCH better off than conventional medicine ever told him he would be and it is due to Reconnective Healing (an energy and information medicine). We watch as Dr. Pearl and the family tell their emotional story.

The movie switches from scientists and doctors talking about all the studies and findings to real stories of how different energy and information medicine is used in healing. A few of the prominent cast members also healed themselves which deepened their interest in alternative medicine. From Dr. Marilyn Schlitz who healed her leg with her mind after a horrible motorcycle accident before it was to be amputated to Dr. Edgar Mitchell (former astronaut) who had his tumor in his kidney shrunk and dissolved by distance healing. When you heal from the “un-healable” you are given back a life that you were told you wouldn't have. The power and gratitude I feel is difficult to atriculate. All I know is that I witness it daily through my own healing.

Harry Massey and Greg Becker had the vision for “TLM“. Harry Massey overcame chronic illness and co-founded Nutri- Energenetic Systems (NES) with scientist Peter Fraser (also featured in the movie). Greg Becker is a director, producer and filmmaker that was always interested in the latest scientific studies and holistic health. Greg and his wife Susan own Emaginate, a San Francisco area based film, video and interactive production company. Together Harry and Greg created this film to give people a new way to look at health and well being.

Epi-genetics — (From Wikipedia) In biology, the term epigenetics refers to changes in phenotype (appearance) or gene expression caused by mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence (hence the name epi – “in addition to” – genetics). These changes may remain through cell divisions for the remainder of the cell’s life and may also last for multiple generations. However, there is no change in the underlying DNA sequence of the organism; instead, non-genetic factors cause the organism’s genes to behave (or “express themselves”) differently.

Or more simply put "Epigenetics refers to modifications in gene expression that are controlled by heritable but potentially reversible changes in DNA methylation and/or chromatin structure."

We can turn these DNA markers on and off without changing our DNA.

As Dr. Bruce Lipton has said Epigenetics is “control above the genes”. Yes, our genes are a blueprint but we with our thoughts and beliefs control the triggers that make up the many different scenarios. In the movie “What If“, Dr. Lipton says, “Yes, Genes are the blueprints but WE are the contractors”.

We can say “cancer runs in our family” but what does that really mean? Is it the environment, learned messages or is it really not in our control and all predetermined by genes? The Living Matrix presented an interesting study that showed adopted children when brought into a family “where cancer is prevalent” had the SAME odds of developing it as if they were biological children.

The Human Body Field (The Morphogenetic Field) –"In The Living Matrix it is stated, “researchers theorize that the body does have a field of energy known as the Body Field or the Morphogenetic Field. There is a hierarchy of fields organizing the body. There are fields of the whole body, there are fields of the organs, fields of the tissues, fields of the cells within those. Fields are around whole body and there are other fields around other parts of the body (limbs)."

The body field is familiar to different cultures under various names, such as life force or vital energy in the west or as qi in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), ki in the Japanese Kampo system, doshas in Ayurvedic medicine, and elsewhere as prana, etheric energy, mana, and homeopathic resonance.

I feel this is so important because other cultures KNEW it was important to include this energy field for hundreds of years. In Western medicine we somehow “dismissed” it and chose to think of the human body more as a machine. BUT with THAT limited thinking there was no way to explain how we develop from a single cell into the complex system of mechanisms and processes that make our body run so seamlessly without our conscious thought. WHEN we experience emotions these are imprinted into this energy field. When the emotions are positive this system of information runs much smoother.

Lynn McTaggart talks about is one done on people from Kosovo that had severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. These people had survived atrocities such as seeing half their families wiped out as well as severe abuse. A form of Information Medicine and Energy Psychology called “Thought Field Therapy” was applied to them. In this form of information medicine they could see that these people had “negative imprints” on their field. They used this form of Energy and Information medicine to clear these disturbances. All of the people were instantly better –they were laughing and happy and once again and able to get on with their lives. This would have taken years of traditional talk therapy as well as medications.

An important quote from the movie is:

“The body field is an energetic field filled with patterns of information. All of the organs in our bodies generate their own specific fields. One organ in particular seems to generate significant fields which affect the entire body. The heart is the Emperor…”

The Heart is constantly emitting sound, pressure waves, heat, light, electrical, magnetic and electro-magnetic signals. The Heart generates by far the largest rhythmic electromagnetic signal in the body. If you look at this magnetic field as a carrier wave — it is being modulated with information so it is the carrier wave for information.

“The heart has been found to have rhythmic beating patterns that can be incoherent or coherent. These patterns are closely linked to our emotions and how we feel.”

When the heart’s rhythmic beating pattern is smooth and ordered it is called a coherent rhythm. That coherent rhythm entrains or synchronizes the brain rhythm, the nervous system, the bodies organs and glands all dance in harmony to that heart coherent rhythm.

The heart not the brain is where information originates. Your heart gets information before it is even presented in front of us (call it ESP, intuition) from the field and then sends a message to the brain which alerts the nervous system to react physically.

There are many other important definitions and studies presented in this movie. The definitions of “Energy Cardiology”, “The Placebo Affect”, “Meridian Lines” and more all point to a new way of looking at healing.

We need to look at healing as a real possibility in all cases. Too often things are dismissed as “incurable” but as I know that isn't true. The growth of Information and Energy Medicine and incorporating it into our conventional medical model will only bring about more of these successful stories. Everyone deserves full health to live to their full potential and Information and Energy Medicine is paving the way so this is indeed possible.

The Living Matrix is a must-see for anyone interested in opening the mind to the possibilities of healing that allopathic medicine does not address. I recommend that you gather your friends and family around to watch it — you will not be disappointed.

Many of the ideas and institutions that define our culture today are breaking down and that’s a good thing, say Lipton and Bhaerman. this is a necessary part of the natural process of clearing out what no longer serves us to make room for a new way of being that will carry us into the next age. Spontaneous Evolution is an insightful, playful, and ultimately hopeful look at the unfolding destiny of our species and how you can play an active role as a co-creator of the world to come.

This is an excellent audio book since Lipton's speaking style keeps me alert and interested. Early on, I was starting to wonder if this book would produce any novel, imaginative ideas . . . good for the beginner anyway. But the last part was worth it all. Even though it's good to see many of our cherished, albeit corrupt societal ideals knocked down these days, what do we have to replace them? It can be depressing, to say the least . . .

Lipton and Bhaerman solve that existential problem to some extent. They compare the evolution of cells to the evolution of societies. While some of their logic is a tad inconsistent, there's too much truth here to ignore. They compare this current economic age to a reptilian predatory phase, soon to be superseded by a "mammalian" phase which will be marked by greater caring and sharing -- not because it's the "right" thing to do (which maybe it is), but because it makes common survival sense. Cooperation, not competition, is the hallmark of most natural orders, and humanity is just now learning about it and recovering the experiences of past isolated societies that had already known this. So as the "dinosaurs" of competition and corruption come crashing down around us, as the actual dinosaurs did apparently, there is a new potential order to look forward to -- one of realizing that each societal part has an essential purpose. Without all parts, we are incomplete. There IS no "survival of the fittest" in the long run. Just as a cell has limits on its growth, or its outer membrane will burst, no individual parts/members of a society can continue to grow at the expense of the rest.

"Just think about what cancer cells running amuke can do to the body . . . . The similiarity in our society is astonishing."

Through history, many cultures have come across Cannabis and the use is not new to most civilizations. In ancient Germanic culture, Cannabis was associated with the Germanic love goddess, Freya. The harvesting of the plant was connected with an erotic high festival. It was believed that Freya lived as a fertile force in the plant's feminine flowers and by ingesting them one became influenced by this divine force. The Celts may have also used Cannabis as Hashish was found in Hallstatt, birthplace of Celtic culture. According to some scholars, Cannabis was an ingredient of holy anointing oil mentioned in various sacred Hebrew texts.

Cannabis also has a Biblical reference and is said to have been used by Jesus himself. The wandering ascetics from India consumed the Cannabis flower in the form of a very popular Hallucinogenic drink called Bhaang. Sufi saints from Persia, the Sikhs in India, the Rastafarians worshiping their God JAH have all made use of Cannabis in some form or the other. There are many modern movements like the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church and the Church of Cognizance which consider Cannabis to be the Holy Eucharist and the Tree of Life.

The Pineal Gland or the 'Seat of the Soul' as described by Rene Descartes, is the focal point of our spiritual guiding system which makes us go beyond the five senses of rationality and become multisensory, tuned into and aware of higher dimensions of consciousness within a holographic cosmos. Cannabis or Marijuana among other psychedelics facilitates the activation of the pineal gland and helps turn on the third eye or the mind's eye directing our spiritual evolution to wholeness.

 

The pineal gland, located in the centre of the brain, is about a quarter of an inch in size, reddish-gray, and weighs about one-tenth of a gram. Unlike other parts of the brain which come in pairs, the pineal gland is singular. Its location in the center of the brain and presence in other species indicates it is an older part of humanity's evolutionary brain system.

The pineal gland is present in all lower vertebrae. In other species, like birds, reptiles and frogs, the pineal gland is called the parietal eye or "third-eye" as its functions closely resemble that of an actual eye. In these other species, the pineal gland has components of an actual eye, with a cornea, rod and cone. It is considered to be the vestige of a functional sense organ of early primitive vertebrates.

Directly affected by the light taken in through the eyes, the pineal regulates sleep, menstrual cycles, mating seasons, hibernation, seasonal flight patterns and many other "instinctual" behaviors.

Tryptamine Trippiness

Psychedelic researcher Dr. Rick Strassman has explained how the pineal gland "is quite active in synthesizing compounds related to serotonin, an important neurotransmitter in the brain. Neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers allowing communication among individual nerve cells. Most typical psychedelic drugs, such as LSD, mescaline, psilocybin, and DMT are active in brain sites which are also affected by serotonin. In addition, most of these drugs are similar in their chemical structure to serotonin."

Strassman states that most of the above substances belong to the "tryptamine" class of drugs, and proposed that the pineal gland produces "one or two endogenous tryptamines found in human blood and cerebrospinal fluid. This latter fluid continually bathes the brain, and compounds found in it most likely affect brain function.

Strassman also explains how "psychedelic drugs, meditational states, spontaneous near-death experiences and other phenomena which may induce stereotypic death/rebirth and paradisal/hellish states act via the pineal gland."

Lyttle points to the universal mystic vision of God as an all-consuming white light, and postulates that on a physiological level, this experience is produced from chemical reactions in the pineal gland which is extremely light sensitive. "Light, the eyes and the 'third eye' or pineal gland form a triad which directly controls and regulates normal or altered consciousness and many bodily functions? these three factors are also directly related to, or implicated in, mystical states and the 'psychedelic' experience."

Visions of white light are not only associated with mysticism and psychedelic explorations, but are also a prevalent image recorded by those who experience the near-death state. A reason for this recurring theme in near-death states may be found with Dr Strassman, who suggests that after death, as the pineal gland shuts down, some of the chemical present in it may turn into "psychedelic" drugs!

According to Dr Strassman, the pineal gland may not only play an important role in death, but also in birth, possibly even in rebirth...

The pineal gland first becomes visible in the human fetus at the same time as does the clear differentiation of the fetus into female or male gender. The time for both of these events is 49 days, the period of time that, according to several Buddhist texts, the life force of a deceased individual coalesces around its next corporeal existence. If the life force does indeed enter through the pineal, the manifestation of this coming and going would be the release of psychedelic tryptamines, which would mediate the visionary experiences associated with near-death, and near-birth states.

Spiritual Traditions

Certain initiatory cults, such as Tantrism, Kundalini and Gnosticism, acknowledged the role of the pineal gland in the spiritual process. The spiritual/instinctual life force was seen as a serpent, due to its physical structure extending from the genitals, through the spine and up into its single all-seeing eye in the pineal gland.

These spiritual systems focussed around the raising of this primordial serpentine energy, based in the genitals and at the core of the pro-creative process. Through certain yogic practices this energy can be reversed and forced to travel up the spine into the brain, where it is reputed to cause "enlightenment".

In the Kundalina system, which has seven distinct energy centers, the pineal gland has been variously identified with the "Ajna Chakra" and alternatively the "Sahasrara Chakra". Both pre-Christian Mithraic and second century Gnostic texts also distinctly refer to the pineal gland in relation to seven distinct energy centers and this serpentine energy.

Not surprisingly, a common experience of those who have successfully raised their kundalini is the vision of all-consuming white light. More importantly, the devotee who successfully raises the kundalini experiences a radical switch in consciousness, obliterating the sense of individuation, and enters Nirvana.

Another potential reference to this curious little gland may occur at the end of the New Testament book of Revelation, where we find that the elect will know God intimately, "his name will be in their foreheads," which is where the pineal deeply lies. Noting the gland's strong connection with light, the rest of the passage is interesting:

"There will be no more night; they will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light."

Likewise in the Qabalistic tradition, the primordial archetypical man, Adam Kadmon, shines forth with a light from his forehead that was rich in complex patterns and linguistic symbols. Similar imagery occurs in the Persian tradition of the light-like sacred fluid, the "vivifying and spermatic" xvarenah. "Ahura Mazda is preeminently the possessor of xvarenah, but this 'flame' also springs from the forehead of Mithra and like a solar light emanates from the heads of sovereigns."

This mind-light from the forehead is also identical with the 3rd Eye of Shiva, which when opened in the individual burns away the concept of ego-bound consciousness, and when opened collectively has the potential to burn away the ties and fetters of the Old World Order.

Perhaps if enough modern psychonauts achieve the pineal experience we can push this new frame of mind onto the rest of ego-bound humanity. Here at the turning of the millennia, in the apocalyptic year of 1999, never has the potential for the state of mind which has been the goal of yogic sages, and psychedelic voyagers alike been so possible to attain for humanity as a whole.

Qigong (or ch'i )

Qigong (or ch'i ) uses breathing techniques and the "energy" that moves through our nervous system to gain strength, improve health and to reverse diseases, by ultimately becoming one with Source through a direct connection with nature and the universe.

Qigong (or ch'i kung) is an internal Chinese meditative practice which uses slow graceful movements (and sometimes breathing techniques) to promote the circulation of qi within the human body, and enhance a practitioner's overall health. Although qigong is often confused with martial arts or tai chi, qigong is usually much slower and focuses on the "qi" aspect to a much greater degree.

With more than 10,000 styles of qigong and 200 million people practicing there are a variety of methods. There are three main reasons why people do qigong:

1.  To gain strength, improve health or reverse a disease

2.  To gain skill working with qi so as to become a healer

3. To become more connected with the "Tao, God, True Source, Great Spirit" for a more meaningful connection with nature and the universe.

The Chinese character for qi in qigong means air in Chinese. Jeff Primack suggests it is possible ancient masters (Yellow Emperor, Lao Tzu etc.) saw the direct link between breathing techniques and the "electrical force" that moved through their nervous system.

Gong means discipline or skill, so qigong is therefore breath or energy skill. The term was not widely known until the 1980's during a period some call the "Qigong Wave" where groups of 10,000-40,000 people regularly gathered inside Chinese stadiums to practice qigong together.

Many in the Chinese government became concerned that qigong could turn into a political weapon and in 1999 banned all large qigong gatherings. Many practitioners wanted to see qigong studied scientifically and not be affiliated with a political agenda or any superstition, but these efforts have largely failed in China as they still do not allow classes to be offered publicly to the citizens.

Currently there is a movement underway in the United States, Europe and other western cultures to preserve the valuable aspects of these traditional Chinese practices. Attitudes toward the scientific basis for qigong vary markedly. Most Western medical practitioners and many practitioners of traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as the Chinese government, view qigong as a set of breathing and movement exercises, with possible benefits to health through stress reduction and exercise.

Other practitioners view qigong in more metaphysical terms, claiming that qi can be felt as a vibration or electrical current and physically circulated through channels called meridians Many testify a reduction or elimination of pain through the use of Qigong.

The Shaman are beings with the ability to heal themselves, and others, work with energies and 'see' visions. through the mastery of energy as a medium of transformation and have been credited with the ability to control the weather, divination, the interpretation of dreams, astral projection. The spiritual healing methods of shamanic are now receiving increased and significant attention in our culture.

Shamanism is a range of traditional beliefs and practices that involve the ability to diagnose, cure, and sometimes cause human suffering by traversing the axis mundi and forming a special relationship with, or gaining control over, spirits. Shamans have been credited with the ability to control the weather, divination, the interpretation of dreams, astral projection, and traveling to upper and lower worlds. Shamanistic traditions have existed throughout the world since prehistoric times.

Shamanism is based on the premise that the visible world is pervaded by invisible forces or spirits that affect the lives of the living. In contrast to animism and animatism, which any and usually all members of a society practice, shamanism requires specialized knowledge or abilities. Shamans are not, however, organized into full-time ritual or spiritual associations, as are priests.

The word shaman originated among the Siberian Tungus (Evenks) and literally means he (or she) who knows; the belief that the word may be derived from Sanskrit is perhaps due to a confusion of the words 'shamanism' and 'shramanism', from the sanskrit shramana, Pali and Prakrit samana; but the samanas were ascetics, not shamans.

It has replaced the older English language term witch doctor, a term which unites the two stereotypical functions of the shaman: knowledge of magical and other lore, and the ability to cure a person and mend a situation. However, at the present time this term is generally considered to be pejorative and anthropologically inaccurate. Medicine man is preferred, especially as not all traditional peoples approve of the use of shaman as a generic term, given that the word comes from a specific place and people.

Shamanistic practices are thought to predate all organized religions, and certainly date back to the neolithic period. Aspects of shamanism are encountered in later, organized religions, generally in their mystic and symbolic practices. Greek paganism was influenced by shamanism, as reflected in the stories of Tantalus, Prometheus, Medea, Calypso among others, as well as in the Eleusinian Mysteries, and other mysteries. Some of the shamanic practices of the Greek religion were later adopted into the Roman religion.

There is a strong shamanistic influence in the Bön religion of central Asia, and in Tibetan Buddhism. Buddhism became popular with shamanic peoples such as the Tibetans, Mongols and Manchu beginning with the eighth century. Forms of shamanistic ritual combined with Tibetan Buddhism became institutionalized as the state religion under the Chinese Yuan dynasty and Qing dynasty. One common element of shamanism and Buddhism is the attainment of spiritual realization, at times mediated by entheogenic (psychedelic) substances.

The shamanic practices of many cultures were virtually wiped out with the spread of Christianity. In Europe, starting around 400 CE, the Christian church was instrumental in the collapse of the Greek and Roman religions. Temples were systematically destroyed and key ceremonies were outlawed. Beginning with the middle ages and continuing into the Renaissance, remnants of European shamanism were wiped out by campaigns against witches. These campaigns were often orchestrated by the Catholic Inquisition.

The repression of shamanism continued as Christian influence spread with Spanish colonization. In the Caribbean, and Central and South America, Catholic priests followed in the footsteps of the Conquistadors and were instrumental in the destruction of the local traditions, denouncing practitioners as "devil worshippers" and having them executed. In North America, the English Puritans conducted periodic campaigns against individuals perceived as witches. More recently, attacks on shamanic practitioners have been carried out at the hands of Christian missionaries to third world countries. As recently as the nineteen seventies, historic petroglyphs were being defaced by missionaries in the Amazon.

It has been postulated that modern state campaigns against the use of psychedelic substances are the offshoot of previous religious campaigns against shamanism.Today, shamanism, once universal, survives primarily among indigenous peoples. Shamanic practice continues today in the tundras, jungles, deserts, and other rural areas, and also in cities, towns, suburbs and shantytowns all over the world. This is especially widespread in Africa as well as South America, where "mestizo shamanism" is widespread.

Many recent efforts have been made trying to link shamanic practice and knowledge with Western, scientific beliefs. Anthropologist Jeremy Narby has proposed that shamans take their consciousness down to the molecular level, working with DNA and viruses that they see as the twin serpents or malicious "darts". The holomovement theory proposed by David Bohm is often seen as an approach to create a scientific foundation for concepts such as parallel worlds and alternative ways to traverse time and space.
